In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Wagoneer L are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The R1S doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.
The Wagoneer L has standard Active Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The R1S doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.
With its standard Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning Plus, the Jeep Wagoneer L is better at preventing collisions with pedestrians than the Rivian R1S, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety:

In a Vehicle-to-Vehicle Frontal Crash Prevention 2.0 test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Jeep Wagoneer L achieved a “Acceptable” rating - the second highest possible - for its performance in forward collision warning and automatic braking systems, demonstrating its excellent capabilities in preventing collisions. The Rivian R1S has not been tested.
Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Wagoneer L has standard Park Assist with Rear Stop that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The R1S doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.
When descending a steep, off-road slope, the Wagoneer L’s optional Hill Descent Control allows you to creep down safely. The R1S doesn’t offer Hill Descent Control.
A passive infrared night vision system optional on the Wagoneer L Grand helps the driver to more easily detect people, animals or other objects in front of the vehicle at night. Using an infrared camera to detect heat, the system then displays the image on a monitor in the dashboard. The R1S doesn’t offer a night vision system.
Both the Wagoneer L and the R1S have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available all wheel drive, around view monitors and driver alert monitors.
