For enhanced safety, the front and middle seat shoulder belts of the Chrysler Voyager are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Toyota Grand Highlander doesn’t offer height-adjustable middle seat belts.

The Chrysler Voyager has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Grand Highlander doesn’t offer a front passenger side knee airbag.

Both the Voyager and the Grand Highlander have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available all wheel drive.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Chrysler Voyager is safer than the Toyota Grand Highlander:

A significantly tougher test than their original offset frontal crash test, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety does 40 MPH small overlap frontal offset crash tests. In this test, where only 25% of the total width of the vehicle is struck, results indicate that the Chrysler Voyager is safer than the Grand Highlander:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Chrysler Voyager is safer than the Toyota Grand Highlander:

Instrumented handling tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and analysis of its dimensions indicate that the Voyager is 5.3% to 5.8% less likely to roll over than the Grand Highlander.

Warranty

There are almost 2 times as many Chrysler dealers as there are Toyota dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Voyager’s warranty.

Fuel Economy and Range

Both the Voyager and the Grand Highlander have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stoplights and heavy traffic. All Voyagers have a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily. The Grand Highlander Hybrid doesn’t offer a way to disable start/stop.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Chrysler Voyager uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Grand Highlander Hybrid Max requires premium, which can cost on average about 84.9 cents more per gallon.

The Voyager has 1.8 gallons more fuel capacity than the Grand Highlander Hybrid’s standard fuel tank (19 vs. 17.2 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Voyager has 1.2 gallons more fuel capacity than the Grand Highlander’s standard fuel tank (19 vs. 17.8 gallons).

The Voyager has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Grand Highlander doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Transmission

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Chrysler Voyager, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the Grand Highlander.

The Voyager stops shorter than the Grand Highlander:

Suspension and Handling

The Voyager has variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The Grand Highlander doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Voyager’s wheelbase is 5.5 inches longer than on the Grand Highlander (121.6 inches vs. 116.1 inches).

Chassis

The front grille of the Voyager uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Grand Highlander doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Passenger Space

The Voyager has 11.8 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Grand Highlander (165.1 vs. 153.3).

The Voyager has 2.5 inches more front hip room, 3.6 inches more front shoulder room, 7.8 inches more rear hip room, 4.2 inches more rear shoulder room, 1.5 inches more third row headroom, 3 inches more third row legroom, 3.8 inches more third row hip room and 3.7 inches more third row shoulder room than the Grand Highlander.

Cargo Capacity

The Voyager’s cargo area provides more volume than the Grand Highlander.

The Voyager has standard Stow ’n Go second and third row seats, which fold flat into the floor. This completely clears a very large cargo area quickly. The Grand Highlander doesn’t offer seats that fold into the floor.

Towing

While the Grand Highlander Hybrid can only tow 3500, any Voyager can tow a minimum of 3600 pounds.

Ergonomics

The Voyager’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Grand Highlander does not have an oil pressure gauge.

The Voyager’s standard sliding doors can be opened with less than three inches side clearance. The Grand Highlander’s standard rear swing-out doors are bulky and make loading in tight spots difficult.

The Voyager’s power side sliding doors make it much easier to load and unload kids and cargo. One touch opens the door, before you even get to the van. The Grand Highlander doesn’t offer a power rear door.

The Voyager’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Grand Highlander’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

The Voyager has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel is only available on the Grand Highlander Limited/Platinum/Nightshade.

Recommendations

Consumer Reports® recommends both the Chrysler Voyager and the Toyota Grand Highlander, based on reliability, safety and performance.

A group of representative automotive journalists from North America selected the Voyager as the 2017 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year. The Grand Highlander has never been chosen.
